Government Must Guarantee Council Tax-Payers Money

9.45.52am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 9th Oct 2008

Commenting on reports that a number of local authorities, including Sutton Council, have funds invested in Icelandic banks,

Tom Brake Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington said, "The PM and the Chancellor must be just as bold in bringing forward a package to safeguard Council tax-payers' money invested by local Councils as they were in saving the banks. Council tax payers mustn't be treated as second class citizens, their money should be as safe as that of private investors or the banks."

Tom Brake has written to the Chancellor asking what assistance he will be giving to Councils whose funds are at risk because of the present financial turmoil.
