Long term repeat prescribing of anti psychotics is a death warrant for elderly

11.33.00am GMT Fri 9th Jan 2009

Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat Sutton and Cheam, a long time campaigner against abusive prescribing of antipsychotics has welcomed todays report from the Alzhiemers Research Trust and called on Health Ministers to stop draging their feet and ban the long term use of the drugs.

Commenting Paul Burstow MP said: "Just how compelling does the evidence have to get before the Government stops this appalling practice?

"These drugs used to be known as the chemical cosh, the reality is these drugs don't just keep people quiet the kill them.

"When the evidence is this clear doctors have to ask themselves whether continuing the prescribe is ethical or lawful!"
