Burstow buys plot of land to block Heathrow expansion7.29.00pm GMT Wed 14th Jan 2009 Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has bought a plot of land at Heathrow to show his opposition to the plans for the building of a third runway there. Mr Burstow, who has voted in the House against the third runway, is keen to support the Greenpeace led campaign against the airports expansion. Sutton and Cheam will be one of those affected by noise from the increased number of flights to and from the West London airport. The Liberal Democrats have been fierce critics of the way the Government has handled the issue of a third runway and have staunchly argued that it is inconsistent with the Government's stated policy of tackling climate change. After buying his plot of land Mr Burstow said: 'I'm glad to be able to put my name to this action and show the Government that their arguments about the benefits of a third runway are unconvincing. For many of us who live under the flight paths this will represent a significant disturbance, never mind what the seemingly unchecked expansion in air travel is doing to our environment. 'It is not too late for the Government to listen, change their minds and do the right thing.'
