Burstow meets Brown to talk about Sri Lanka

12.38.00pm GMT Mon 26th Jan 2009

Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, is meeting the Prime Minister on Wednesday to discuss the situation in Sri Lanka.

In the past Mr Burstow has asked parliamentary questions on this topic; in particular about what the government is doing to ensure the rights of the Tamil people are respected by the Sinhalese government.

This week he, and other MPs concerned about the plight of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, will meet Gordon Brown for an update on the situation and to ascertain what action the Foreign Office and British consulate is taking in the current circumstances.

Mr Burstow said:

'I'm very pleased that Mr Brown has agreed to our request for a meeting. Many of my constituents are deeply concerned about the turbulent situation in Sri Lanka and regularly contact me regarding their worries.

'Hopefully Mr Brown will be able to reassure both myself and my constituents that the British government is making every effort to ensure the Tamil minority are protected and that aid agencies will be given access before an even greater humanitarian crisis unfolds.'
