Kindness of strangers helps local MP get to Westminster

10.34.00am GMT Mon 2nd Feb 2009

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, was not about to let the snow stop him getting to Westminster. Despite rail and bus services being cancelled the intrepid MP set out to walk from his home in Cheam to Morden to catch the tube. Walking down the Sutton by-pass on St Dunstan's Hill Mr Burstow decided to try and thumb a lift. Within minutes he was sitting in a transit van bound for London.

Commenting Paul Burstow MP said:

"I was determined to get into Parliament to take part today. When I started trying to thumb a lift I was not confident anyone would stop. It was a very pleasant surprise when a white van pulled up and offered me a lift. I was really grateful to the driver who dropped me off right outside Parliament. I am not recommending hitch hiking but it was good to see the kindness of strangers."
