Improved security and ticketing gates at Carshalton station - Brake1.38.25pm GMT Wed 18th Feb 2009 New measures to clamp down on fare dodgers and make stations in south London safer including Carshalton train station have been announced by Transport Minister Andrew Adonis. Under the measures, new ticketing gates will be installed in Carshalton in order to combat fare evasion. Staffing levels will be increased to supervise the gates and improve security. Additional ticket machines will also be installed at Wallington station to make it easier for passengers to purchase tickets. Commenting on the announcement local MP said Tom Brake said: 'I am pleased to see that one of the key advantages of installing these gates is that they must be supervised and therefore staff are present and visible at the station.' 'Gates should also bring reduction in vandalism and fare evasion. 'Every day I meet constituents who are telling me that we need more visible presence at our local station as there is usually no staff in the late afternoon. I have raised that issue several times with Southern over the past years and I am really delightful that they have decided to act.' 'The time where the station was empty and unsafe at night will soon be over. From next year people from Carshalton and Wallington will feel safer as there will be staff around until 11pm.' 'They will also be able to ask advice about their journey and easily seek out help.' From as early as March the new ticket gates will be staffed when operational. From next year they will be staffed for 15 hours per day, including between 7pm and 11pm, improving security and making it safer for passengers to travel late at night.
