School admissions forum - a disappointment

9.45.00am GMT Wed 25th Feb 2009

Commenting on the decision by the Sutton Schools Admission Forum to make no comment on Nonsuch and Wallington High School For Girls plans to change their admission rules Paul Burstow MP said:

"It was disappointing that members of the Admissions Forum felt unable to voice any concerns about the proposals. It exposes a serious flaw in the Government's system for scrutinising changes to the way in which schools admit children and has let my constituents down.

"A reduction in the choice of places at girls schools, more children thrown into limbo without the offer of a school place in the borough, more children travelling miles to go to school; these are the consequences of the changes proposed by Nonsuch and Wallington.

"It is still possible for Governors at both schools to listen to and understand the concerns of local residents and come up with a fairer scheme."
