Burstow gets science lesson from constituent5.04.00pm GMT Mon 9th Mar 2009 MP for Sutton and Cheam, Paul Burstow, today offered his congratulations to Sutton resident Suzanne Newton as she presented a poster on her biological research work in the Houses of Parliament. Miss Newton, a Phd student from Kingston University, had fought off stiff competition to be selected for today's event, called SET for Britain, designed to encourage and promote the work of Britain's early-career scientists and engineers. After explaining her work to a judging panel, Miss Newton then chatted to Mr Burstow about the research behind the poster she presented today, on a potential way to reduce damage to the brain following a stroke entitled: 'A tachykinin activated pathway in the brain could be a potential cause of neurogenic inflammation and cell death as a result of brain trauma and stroke.' Mr Burstow said; 'While I can't pretend to have understood the finer points of the tachykinin activated pathway, in the way that Miss Newton does, I have only admiration for her dedication and intelligence which was displayed today in the work she presented. 'Kingston is London's top ranking new university and it's great to have such innovative and important work going on within our local area. Hopefully we may all reap the benefit of research like Miss Newton's in the future.'
