The future of services for older people in Sutton was discussed last Friday (18th July 2008) by older people and older peoples services providers at a consultation event organised by Sutton Centre for the Voluntary Sector (SCVS).

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, won praise for his campaigning on dementia from an unexpected source on Tuesday (15th July) during a Parliamentary debate on dementia care. Health Minister, Ivan Lewis said that the local MP had done much over many years to raise the importance of dementia and credit for getting the Government to acknowledge it as one of the biggest health and social care challenges. The Minister also said that Mr Burstow had done more than any parliamentarian to highlight the issue of inappropriate and abusive prescribing of anti-psychotics drugs.

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has apologised for mailing his annual report to residents moving into his constituency in pre-paid parliamentary envelopes. The cost of using the parliamentary envelopes and stationery will be repaid by Mr Burstow.

The Henderson Hospital campaign has cross party support as Liberal Democrat MPs Paul Burstow, Tom Brake and Norma Lamb met with Health Minster Ivan Lewis, Conservative Shadow for mental health Anne Milton and Labour MP Lynne Jones were unable to attend after the date of the meeting was re-arranged but both were eager to show their support for the pioneering mental health hospital which treats severe personality disorder. The meeting took place the same week as the National Commissioning Services Group are due to publish their report on the need of people with complex personality disorder.

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has welcomed a promise by St Helier Chief Executive to draft a contingency plan to make sure that patients do not lose access to telephones, TV and radio in the event that the company supplying those services ceases to trade.

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, invited local volunteer hero, Marilyn Gordon-Jones to the House of Commons (on 24th June) to congratulate her on her outstanding work in the community and to celebrate along with other volunteer heros from around the country.

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has challenged Environment Ministers to explain how a pesticide called aminopyralid contaminated manure used by gardeners and allotmenteers on the Benhilton allotment and twenty other allotments in the borough. The contamination has ruined vegetable crops and raised questions about the risk to human health.

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has condemned Labour and Conservative MPs who voted against plans to tighten up the expense rules and introduce independent spot checks, describing it as voting for the sugar coating without taking any of the medicine. Mr Burstow was one of the minority of MPs who backed a package of reforms which would have seen a more rigorous audit of how MPs use their allowances.

Thu 3rd Jul 2008:

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has welcomed as sensible a decision by the Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust to consult on its governance arrangements including the possibility of a demerger of the two hospitals. But he has warned that any changes to the governance arrangements and in particular an amicable divorce between the two hospitals must not derail investment plans at St Helier.

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has welcomed the news that the local NHS is close to finalising it plans for £140 million investment at St Helier hospital and the development of local care centres in the borough. But he has warned that after a decade of costly dither and delay rapid progress is essential.

The re-linking of the state pension to earnings moved a step further away today (25th June) after Conservatives in the House of Lords abstained on a key vote.

Sutton and Cheam MP, Paul Burstow, has welcomed a decision by Sutton Council to throw out a developer's plans to build a 19 storey apartment block on the outskirts of the town centre bordering a residential area of Victorian terraces.
